Gears of War 4 is set to be among protagonists at GDC 2017, where The Coalition team will be discussing topics in tech that were particularly important and interesting in the making of the Xbox One/Windows 10 exclusive third person shooter. In particular, there will be a panel hosted by Senior Technical Animator Steven Dickinson.
He’ll be explaining how he and his team built a technique called “motion warping” that helped them produce “more with less” using fewer animation assets while actually increasing visual fidelity.
“The amount of assets needed for adequate coverage in today’s large AAA titles can be crushing. Multiple animation blending also reduces visual freedom as blended animations must be of similar style and timing. Some games have tackled this content explosion by dynamically warping motion to meet the spatial constraints,” the panel descriptions says.
“These are often ad hoc/specific to particular actions and not exposed to the animator. For ‘Gears of War 4’, The Coalition developed a generalized solution by introducing the concept of warp points.” The panel will be on March 1st at 11 AM. Unfortunately it won’t be livestreamed.
GDC 2017 is set to kick off on February 27th at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.
