Grand Theft Auto V launch on Xbox 360 hasn’t been a smooth ride, numerous complains we received from our readers and complaints on GTA forums points towards a specific problem: GTA V crash and freeze issues is appearing only on older models of Xbox 360 (2006-2008 models) and small size HDD.
We have listed below few complaints of users from GTA forums:
“I’ve probably reinstalled the game about 10 times now,” said one user. “I’m thinking it might be my 20GB HDD? After I installed the game I probably [have] a couple hundred MB left. Could it possibly be a problem that I don’t have enough excess memory after the install?”
“Same problem here. Xbox from 2006, original 20gb model, sent in for repairs in 2009 for RROD,” said another user yesterday. “I bought a 250 gb hard drive for it, but otherwise it’s the same console I’ve had for years. I can’t play for more than 30 minutes without the game freezing on me, and I’ve tried every troubleshooting step I’ve seen here and on other websites.”
The freeze issues seems to happen early-on either after cut-scenes or after first missions. To overcome this issue one user having X360 with 20GB HDD tried installing the disc to different locations i.e Disc One data onto HDD whereas Play Disc Data on USB and vice-versa also, but sadly he still encounters freeze issues.
“20 gig 360 here. Having random freezing happening as well,” says another user. “I’ve tried everything as far as installing with no success. Obviously the game is unplayable like this. Having a friend lend me a xbox, but this is ridiculous…”
One user said he contacted Xbox Live Support, which provided the following steps for addressing freeze/crash issue. “It worked for me,” he said.
- Delete all GTA 5 game data.
- Clear system cache three times.
- Delete marketplace data from storage system items.
- Unplug console for three minutes.
- Install disc 1.
- Power off, do not insert disc 2.
- Install disc 2.
As the above fix comes from official Xbox Support, we advice readers to follow it.
