Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice sold 500,000 units in just three months


Ninja Theory’s latest game, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, has sold over 500,000 copies since the game’s launch back in August 2017. It’s sold a pretty impressive amount of copies for just three months, especially given the fact that it’s a digital-only title. The developer took to its official blog to make the announcement along with the final developer diary.

Ninja Theory reports over 75,000 preorders on both PC and PlayStation 4 ahead of launch, with 250,000 units sold in the first week priced at $29.99 apiece. The 500,000 units sold over the last few months generated $13 million in revenue, which allowed the company to generate a profit. This occurred ahead of the projected schedule of six months after release. 

The game, which took three years to develop and release from a team of 20, follows a young woman named Senua who goes on a quest to find her lover Dillion. Her mission takes her through Helheim, essentially Hell in Norse mythology, as she fights off monsters in both real life and in her head. Senua’s mental illness is a major plot point, with attempted conversations about psychosis and its effects on the human mind.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice released to generally positive scores, though it does tend to suffer from repetitive combat and linear mechanics. It’s an interesting, great-looking adventure, however, despite its many shortcomings.
