The first evidence that PlayStation 4 Slim is already in development, at Sony, has arrived. Samsung has just issued a press-release to Gamepur, detailing that the firm has started mass production of industry’s first 8 Gigabit (1GB) GDDR5 DRAM memory chips.
Here’s how this announcement is related to PlayStation 4 and this rumored “Slim Model”, current PlayStation 4 model uses a total of 16 512MB GDDR5 chips, and it’s coming from Samsung. Now, making use of this “8 1GB chips” (in simple term we can call it an upgrade version of the one used in current PS4 models), the overall cost will see a dramatic downfall in various way, estimated to be around $299 when it finally launches in markets.
Here is what the press-release from Samsung reads:
“Samsung Electronics, the world leader in advanced memory technology, announced that it has begun mass-producing the industry’s first 8 gigabit (Gb) GDDR5* DRAM based on the company’s leading-edge 20-nanometer (nm) process technology. GDDR5 is the most widely used discrete graphics memory in the world.
Designed for use in graphics cards for PCs and supercomputing applications, and on-board graphics memory for game consoles and notebook PCs, discrete graphics DRAM provides an extensive amount of bandwidth to process large high quality graphically-oriented data streams.
We expect that our 8Gb GDDR5 will provide original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with the best graphics memory solution available for game consoles as well as general use notebook PCs,” said Joo Sun Choi, Executive Vice president of Memory Sales and Marketing at Samsung Electronics.
From the quotes of Joo Sun Choi, its pretty clear that this upcoming chips from Samsung will be used to power the (long rumored) PlayStation 4 Slim (chances are there that it might be used to power Nintendo’s next-gen console). But, if i were to place a safe bet among these two options, i would go for PlayStation 4 Slim.
Tell us in the comment section below, what do you think: Is PS4 Slim is closer than we think, if YES, would it be another blow to Xbox One?
