I don’t know if many of you notice but there has been a different approach with respect to games development between Sony and Microsoft. The latter is very much busy in doubling games as services, for example, Minecraft and Sea of Thieves, and focusing more on community driven PC-friendly games like State of Decay and PlayerUnkown’s Battlegrounds. On the other side, Sony is investing most of their money in big-AAA story driven games.
In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Sony’s Shawn Layden was asked about this assessment (the one mention above) and what exactly is the reason behind going for a completely different approach than your competitor? and to this he replied that he is a man who believes in the philosophy of playing to your strengths, and most of the PlayStation first-party studios (Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games, Santa Monica, Sony Japan) are known for creating a story, creating characters (i.e their strengths).
“My philosophy is to play to my strengths,” he argues. “And if you look at the studios we have – Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, Santa Monica Studios, Japan Studios – that’s what we do well. We do a story. We create characters. I was so gratified to see the response to [Horizon Zero Dawn protagonist] Aloy when she showed up on the screen and the crowd went wild.
“Those are the kind of things we do well. It’s what we’re known for. It really speaks to our entertainment DNA. We wish to entertain. We wish to make you happy. We wish to make you cry. That whole range of emotions we can pluck at to make you have a great experience.
Shawn further clarified that Sony is also not behind Games as a service department. MLB The Show game has got the same virtual currency like many other sports games currently have. But again Shawn made it pretty clear that Sony Worldwide Studios is mostly about Big on Character and Big On Story.
“Games as a service? We have a bit of that with our MLB [The Show] title – it’s got the same virtual currency a lot of sports have – and we have other titles that come up that play in that space. But if you want to make a big generalisation about what does Worldwide Studios do? We’re big on character. We’re big on story.”
That is a really great point made by Shawn Layden – Always play to your strengths, and this is paying off really well for PlayStation brand against Xbox. Naughty Dog has created an amazing story-driven AAA games – Uncharted, The Last of Us, Guerrilla Games is not too far behind – Horizon Zero Dawn received great response from fans and critics both, Santa Monica’s God of War series is getting bigger.
Compare the above line-up of PlayStation exclusive AAA-story driven games and you will come to know where does Microsoft stand?
