Most popular movies and TV shows have been given the “8-bit” treatment for a mock video game. This time Netflix took things even further by creating an official game based on one of its most popular licenses: Stranger Things.
Stranger Things: The Game is a retro-flavored mobile title that includes familiar characters from the show, taking on a Zelda-style adventure game vibe.
It’s a fantastic tribute to the show despite being little more than a thinly-veiled promotion for Stranger Things: Season 2. It even features blocky, 16-bit inspired graphics reminiscent of SNES classics most of us wasted hours and hours on back in the day.
The game itself is rife with puzzle-solving elements, assigning a different ability to each character. You’ve no doubt played several games like this one before, but the Stranger Things skin somehow makes it a lot more fun.
You can pick up Stranger Things: The Game for free via the App Store on iOS or the Google Play Store for Android users. It’s free-to-play without the extra trappings that those titles typically include, so it’s a fun little escape for a few hours for fans of the show.
If you haven’t seen the first season of Stranger Things or haven’t been caught up yet in the cyclone of awesome that it represents, do yourself a favor and start watching. If there’s time, get caught up before downloading the game. You’ll get a lot more out of it that way.
