Mario’s big debut on the Nintendo Switch was, unsurprisingly, incredibly popular: a financial briefing from Nintendo reveals Super Mario Odyssey is a best-selling title around the world. Within the game’s first three days on store shelves, Nintendo estimates the game’s global sell-through rate is over two million units within three days.
As Nintendo revealed during this week’s six month fiscal year progress update, Nintendo purposefully released Super Mario Odyssey “against a backdrop of maintained and growing buzz” around the Switch, which partly contributed to the game’s success. And now the company plans to use that tactic to dominate the holiday market.
“We will endeavor to further increase the number of consumers who want to purchase Super Mario Odyssey, and eventually we would like the game to be seen as an evergreen title that has longevity in the market beyond this holiday season,” Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima said during the briefing.
Super Mario Odyssey isn’t just a successful title, it’s quickly becoming a must-have for Switch owners around the world. Nintendo estimates around seven million Nintendo Switch units are owned by players worldwide. So that means around every one in four Switch users already have Super Mario Odyssey. That’s no simple feat on Nintendo’s part. Clearly, Odyssey is one popular game.
This holiday season looks to be strong for Nintendo in general. Next month, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon debuts on the Nintendo 3DS, as well as Psyonix’s esports hit Rocket League. From first-party games to must-own Switch titles, the holiday season will be a strong one for the Japanese games giant. Expect Nintendo to dominate Christmas lists around the world.
