Valkyria Chronicles 4, the newest installment in the long-running Valkyria saga, is making its worldwide debut next year in 2018. The tactical role-playing game will be coming to the west, specifically for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch as well, marking the first time a game from the Valkyria series has appeared on the console.
The new game will take place in the same timeframe as the first game, Valkyria Chronicles, but it will feature a brand new cast of characters to follow as the Second Europan War between the Atlantic Federation and Autocratic Eastern Imperial Alliance rages on. Players will take up the role of Commander Claude Wallace and his team of childhood friends in Squad E as they fight for Operation Northern Cross, their last efforts at taking the Imperial capital and bringing the bloody war to an end.
Claude Wallace’s Squad E consists of engineer Riley Miller, “hotheaded” Darcsen Raz, sniper Kai Schulen, and several others working through the harsh and unforgiving cold and the horrors of war. To that end, the game will feature combat that cobbles together real-time third-person shooter mechanics from the “BLiTZ” battle system with a new class called the Grenadier, as well as “Last Stand” options for troops on the battlefield, and more.
The game will adopt the same watercolor-inspired aesthetic from the previous installments as well, though the engine has been overhauled for an improved look overall. It’s a distinct part of the game’s look that sets it apart from other titles, and from what’s been showcased in the first trailer, it does look pretty good.
Check out the trailer and get ready to blow through the first three games so you can be all caught up for when 2018 rolls around.
