Best moveset for Abomasnow and Mega Abomasnow in Pokémon Go

What are the best moves?
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Abomasnow is one of those Pokémon you don’t want to fight against in Pokémon Go. You know how to beat it, but you know when it does show up, it’ll be the time you’re least prepared for them. It’s a pretty solid choice if you build your team to work alongside Abomasnow, and starting on December 1, you can unlock Mega Abomasnow. What are the best moves this Pokémon can learn?

Abomasnow is a Grass and Ice-type Pokémon. It has a maximum CP of 2,362, an attack of 178, a defense of 158, and stamina of 207. It’s weak to Bug, Fighting, Flying, Poison, Rock, and Steel-type moves, and is especially weak to Fire-type attacks. It’s resistant to Electric, Grass, Ground, and Water-type moves. The Mega Abomasnow has a maximum CP of 3,850, an attack of 240, a defense of 191, and stamina of 191.

These are all of the moves Abomasnow can learn.

Fast moves

  • Powder Snow (Ice-type) – 5 damage and 4 energy per turn (2.5 damage per turn)
  • Razor Leaf (Grass-type) – 11 damage and 2 energy per turn (5.5 damage per turn)

Charge moves

  • Blizzard (Ice-type) – 140 damage and 75 energy
  • Energy Ball (Grass-type) – 90 damage and 55 energy (10% chance to lower an opponent’s defense by one rank)
  • Outrage (Dragon-type) – 110 damage and 60 energy
  • Return (Normal-type) – 130 damage and 70 energy
  • Weather ball (Ice-type) – 60 damage and 35 energy

Abomasnow does not have a variety of fast moves to pick from, but the charge moves offer further depth to the Pokémon. For the fast move, you want to use powder snow over razor leaf. While razor leaf provides more damage, powder snow makes up for the lack of damage with increased energy output, allowing Abomasnow to use its charge moves far more often.

When it comes to its charge moves, you have several choices. Although, you want to remove blizzard and return. These moves require far too much energy, despite the amount of damage they can dish out. Of the choices available, energy ball and weather ball (Ice) are the best options. They lean into Abomasnow’s typing to give it a STAB for each attack. They’re fairly low energy, meaning when coupled with powder snow, Abomasnow can do some heavy damage to several Pokémon.

When you Mega Evolve Abomasnow, it’ll be a great Pokémon for specific raid battles. When Mega Evolutions become available for trainers to use, it has some use in the Master Leagues.

So long as you keep Abomasnow’s kit to powder snow for its fast move, and then energy ball and weather ball (Ice), you can do some solid work with it.
