While it hasn’t provided any solid roadmap, throughout the pre-launch window Rare has made it quite clear what we should be expecting to drop in terms of new content and updates in Sea of Thieves during the first three months.

According to the details slipped thus far, as gathered by Sea of Thieves Hub, there’ll be two steps that will allow the game to feel a lot less empty and make a much better use of the already existing assets.

Sea of Thieves: Updates Coming In 3 Months

While in the future there’ll be more instruments to play, private crews, further customization options, it’s nice to focus on what happens in the next three months to a game that really needs to improve in terms of content.

First of all, there will be global live events. These do not have a solid date yet, but based on the few statements released on the topic they’ll start to happen in around 1 or 2 months, and will involve new NPCs delivering particular missions to complete in a set amount of time.

Producer Joe Neate told The Guardian that “We’re running timed events, so for a weekend there may be a character in the tavern whom you’ve not seen before. If you chat to him, he’ll set you off on a quest to retrieve something he’s lost and he’ll give you a reward you can only get at that time.”

In a Reddit AMA pre-launch event, Rare hinted at the possibility that the first live event might be involving hostile mermaids as a new enemy type to face. “New visitors soon there may be, traveling far across the sea, depth of night with eyes aglow, crawling the earth cast in shadow,” the developer said.

Then, there’s content coming in three months as part of the Captaincy Update, probably around June. There’ll be pets, as monkeys and cats, that will be owned by a single player but with the chance for others users to play with them, pick them up, shoot them out of cannons (wut) and more.

“The first example of [microtransactions] will be pets. I can have a monkey in a hat on my shoulder. I can have a cat. But other people will be able to interact with my pet, too.” Joe Neate told The Guardian.

“If I have a monkey, you’ll be able to pick it up, run off with it, throw it overboard … but it’ll come back. I desperately want to be able to fire pets out of cannons. Again, they’ll be fine – cats always land on their feet.”

There’ll also be ship ownership, which is something thought to be further rewarding players who have already achieved the Pirate Legends rank and want to make a step even further through the Captain Legend rank.

The system is reportedly going to allow to name a ship and have more customizable parts, on top of more customization options for those already existing.

So, apparently, that’s it, even though other secondary stuff such as speaking trumpet are mentioned and are possibly coming to the game quite soon. We’ll, sure enough, learn more about this at E3 2018.
