E3 2018 was the occasion for Microsoft to start discussing its plans for the future of gaming, a future where there are new Xbox consoles and those are already in a stage of research and development.

Recently, Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot said that the next generation of consoles would be the last and that after that generation of gaming would be completely streaming based. A vision Phil Spencer doesn’t seem to share.

Spencer Confirms Next Xbox Gent Won't Be Last

“I could see why he would say that,” he said in a post-E3 2018 interview with Eurogamer.net. “I’m a little more bullish on people having the local hardware to run games for many, many years.”

“What we will find is more people playing the quality of games we’re used to seeing on a console on other devices. But that doesn’t mean this experience of playing on my television with a great sound system and great frame-rate and great resolution is going to go away that quickly. What you’ll see is a diversifying of the places where people can play great content.”

“So, I do think as we move forward, more people will be playing more kinds of content on other devices. But television will be one of those. We’re committed to that.”

Indeed, while I understand Ubisoft’s position when they say so, I comprehend Microsoft (and Sony, and Nintendo) – which are also gradually preparing to the streaming revolution – have sold so many consoles over the last two generation that renouncing to that business would not make much sense.
