Can You Use Your Old Save in Valheim 1.0?

Do old saves work in Valheim 1.0, or should you make a new one?

Valheim 1.0 is finally here, bringing the long-awaited Deep North biome and plenty of new content to the survival game. If you’ve spent hundreds of hours building your world during Early Access, you don’t have to start over, but there are a few things you should know before loading up your old save. Here is all you need to know about whether you can use your old save in Valheim 1.0.

Do Old Saves Work With Valheim 1.0?

Yes, old Valheim saves are fully usable in the 1.0 update. Nothing happens to your existing saves with the Valheim 1.0 launch, and their location on the drive stays the same as well. Your old characters and worlds remain where you left them, and you can continue playing them as normal.

The only catch is that old biomes that were generated in your saves will remain the same, even though they would’ve been different had they been generated after the 1.0 patch. On the other hand, new unexplored biomes will be properly generated with all the new content available.

Should You Start a New World in Valheim 1.0?

If you want to get the best possible experience from Valheim 1.0, it is best that you start a new save. The main reason is the new Deep North biome. While the biome can appear in an existing world, its generation only works properly in areas that have not already been explored. If you’ve already explored large portions of your world, particularly areas where the Deep North would have generated, you may not get the intended experience.

This doesn’t mean your old world is broken. You can continue using it and head toward unexplored areas to find the new content. If you’ve invested a lot of time into a base or want to continue with an existing character, keeping your old save is completely viable. If you’re looking for the intended 1.0 progression experience, however, starting fresh is the safer choice.

Can You Access the Deep North on an Old Save?

Yes, you can head straight toward the Deep North after updating an existing world to 1.0. However, it is recommended to start over rather than rush to the new biome, as the progression curve is slightly harder. The Deep North is the final biome added with the 1.0 update, alongside new weapons, armor, creatures, crafting materials, building pieces, food, locations, events, and other mechanics.
