In 2017, Respawn Entertainment announced that it was building a virtual reality game in partnership with Oculus. Back then, the studio hadn’t revealed Apex Legends yet, nor had been acquired by Electronic Arts, so things are slightly different now.

Despite that, EA has allowed the team to keep working on that game, and the time for the reveal is about to come, as hinted at by Eurogamer. Respawn has indeed shared that it will be revealed on September 25-26 at the Oculus Connect event and shared the first details about what it is.

The game in question is said to be a “first-person combat experience” for Oculus Rift, Quest and all the devices being worked on at Facebook, which means it will retain the feeling of Titanfall and Apex Legends but will focus on melee, instead of shooting.

Back in 2017, the studio said that “while the game remains secret (spoiler: it’s not Titanfall or Star Wars), our relationship with Oculus is now out in the open. We couldn’t be happier to have such a great partner, and to be building our game on such an amazing platform as the Rift.”

“There are so many cool parts to making a game in VR, but perhaps the most intense one is emotion,” they added. “While you know you’re wearing a headset, your brain processes VR on an emotional level. Though you’re in a simulation, you feel like you’re there. It’s all kinds of awesome.”

Facebook is investing a lot on virtual reality after a moment where it looked like it was moving away to favor an AR/VR mixed approach. Now, it seems it is trying and attracting more partners after being hugely comforted by Quest’s sales, and among those partners, there could be Ubisoft with more Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed.

We’ll surely learn more about what’s going on at Oculus Connect in late September.
