Talking with the guys at The Hollywood Reporter, the boss at the Worldwide Studios was asked about Sunset Overdrive, an Xbox One and PC exclusive that has been released a few years ago and that now seriously risks disappearing since the team founded by Ted Price is going to work only on PlayStation.
Layden indirectly said that the studio is indeed going to focus on the “Spider-Man franchise and things like Ratchet & Clank” going forward, so it looks like there won’t be much space for other games and intellectual properties to be explored, at least not those which are linked in some way to other platforms.
“That was a great experience for Insomniac, and they learned a lot through that, as well,” mentioned quite honestly the exec, since Insomniac nurtured the idea of making a Spider-Man game during the development of Sunset Overdrive, its proper open-world title.
“As far as the IP itself, we really haven’t turned over the files on that one to see what that actually means, to be honest,” he added. “We like what they’ve been doing in the Spider-Man franchise, and things like Ratchet & Clank are certainly vital series in the present and future. That’s what we’re concentrating on.”
So, this is it. Never say never, but from the looks of it, Sony is not interested in further exploring the intellectual property and has all the right to do so, considering how massive was the success of Spider-Man and how beloved is the Ratchet & Clank series. Are you disappointed at that?
