As Microsoft’s Project xCloud service continues to move slowly from beta to general public service, the company is looking to grow right along with it — and that means replacing the Xbox One S consoles in the “racks” with new ones.

Microsoft’s Kareem Choudhry, who serves as the corporate vice president with the xCloud team, recently spoke to Stevivor about the changes that will come as the new hardware gets ready for release. Eventually, the 2U racks that currently hold the Xbox One S consoles (in each of the 13 Azure data centers worldwide) will be swapped out with Project Scarlett machines once they’re good and ready.

“We designed (Project) Scarlett with the cloud in mind as well, and just as you’re going to see our console product family evolve with that next generation, the cloud is going to evolve along with it,” he explained.

We’re not sure what that means on the compatibility front for the future, but keep in mind that Xbox One X should stay right where it is since it’s a powerful console in its own right. We’ll see what changes come when the Project Scarlett hardware is eventually revealed.

For the time being, the preview program is currently underway with a few select users. It will eventually grow to more regions and more devices next year, giving more opportunities to players that want to see what the service is all about.

We’ll let you know as soon as more information is available. In the meantime, you can sign-up for the xCloud service, and give it a try. There are currently 50 games awaiting testing, including Tekken 7!
