Fans of the Pokémon Trading Card Game should mark their calendars for Feb. 27, as new tin boxes filled with Pokémon cards based on Pokémon Sword and Shield are set to release that date.

The Pokémon Cards have been going strong for decades at this point, having been part of the huge Pokémon boom of the late 1990s. We personally have vivid memories of talking with classmates about what kind of cards we have, and which cards we want. (We also remember the time we cried in front of a card shop because we didn’t get a Butterfree card in the latest booster pack, but, uh, who didn’t?).

With Pokémon Sword and Shield having releasing last month, the Pokémon Company have been recently rolling out new cards based on those two games. A TCG box set called the Galar Collection was released on Nov. 15, and each box was themed after the three starters in Sword and Shield.

Back in August, it was announced that the TCG will be receiving new types of cards called Pokémon V. It was later revealed that Pokémon V cards are needed to use XMax cards. XMax are cards that feature Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon from Sword and Shield. Dynamax and Gigantamax are the giant forms of Pokémon. VMax cards have much higher HP and attack stats than the average card, which is similar to how Dynamaxing works in the games.

Pokémon V cards of Rillaboom, Cinderace, and Inteleon were first announced at the end of the Sword and Shield trailer from Nov. 27. However, it is only today that the Pokémon Company revealed how those cards will be released.

New tin boxes, which are special boxes that contain several booster cards and an exclusive card, called the Galar Partners Tins, are going to release on Feb. 27, 2020. There will be three new tin boxes, each featuring Rillaboom, Cinderace, or Inteleon. Each tin will have a V card of one of those Pokémon, as well as 5 Pokémon TCG booster packs, and a code card to unlock a special promo card in the Pokémon TCG Online app. These tin boxes will be available in the Pokémon Center stores, and wherever TCG products are sold.

Pokémon V and VMax cards are still very new in the meta of the game, so it should be worth checking up on these cards as they release, especially if you’re a competitive player.
