Microsoft And Sony Shouldn’t Copy Nintendo, Xbox Co-Creator Says

Xbox Co-Creator Ed Fries has a piece of advice for Microsoft and Sony – Don’t Copy Nintendo. Ed Fries explains his advice in detail in a recent interview with GeekWire.

According to Ed Fries, Xbox co-creator, Microsoft, and Sony shouldn’t be trying and copying what Nintendo does, but strive to find their uniqueness points and focus on them as we’re approaching the possibly revolutionary Labo.

“When I first saw it, I thought it was creative, but I wasn’t sure if it was going to be successful. Some of the ideas we had actually talked about at Xbox, like having controllers you could separate and hold in each hand,” Fries said of Nintendo Switch, which he apparently has fallen in love with.

Xbox Creator On Why Sony and Microsoft Should Not Copy Nintendo

“I first played Zelda on the Wii U and enjoyed the game, and thought, maybe I don’t need a Switch. Eventually, I buckled and got a Switch to play Mario, and I was really surprised how many different and creative ways they use the controllers, how they can be joined onto different supports, or you can separate them and hand them to another player and turn them sideways.”

Then he added the most interesting thing in his interview with GeekWire, as he thinks – and it’s quite important if you consider Fries is one of the fathers of the original Xbox console and brand – both Microsoft and Sony shouldn’t copy Nintendo, but try to do something else which is more under their skins.

“I don’t think the right thing for Microsoft or Sony to do is imitate Nintendo or try to be Nintendo. I don’t think they’ll succeed by being Nintendo. I think they’ve gotta figure out what it is that they do well and continue to do that well.”

We’ll see if after PlayStation Move and Kinect, some kind of response to Wii, Sony and Microsoft have learned their lessons or will be trying again to offer their visions on the newly born cardboard video games market when Labo releases in April.
