A ResetEra source who leaked Metroid: Samus Returns’ existence claims a second title is currently in development.
Good news for Metroid fans eager for another 2D title in the franchise. Another 2D Metroid title is rumored to be in development. And while it’s still early in production, the source behind the claim has a history for supplying accurate information.
“AFAIK, there’s an unannounced 2D Metroid game on development on a really early production state,” mocolostrocolos, a user on gaming forum ResetEra, wrote in mid-December. “Can’t say the studio though, don’t want to jeopardize my source.”
Normally, a rumor on a gaming board like ResetEra isn’t particularly worth paying attention to, especially because anyone can hop online and make release predictions over the internet. But back in 2016 and 2017, mocolostrocolos supplied accurate information about the Nintendo 3DS’ Metroid 2 remake, Metroid: Samus Returns, before the game was officially announced.
In the user’s original posts, mocolostrocolos claimed Nintendo was working on a “Metroid 2 remake for 3DS,” repeatedly hinting that “there’s something going on with Metroid 2” and a studio has “been working on a Metroid game for a long time.” Mocolostrocolos also correctly revealed that the game was not being developed internally. It turned out that Spanish video game developer MercuryStream collaborated with Nintendo to create the title.
If mocolostrocolos is correct, then the game is pretty early in development, so fans shouldn’t expect a second 2D Metroid game to launch any time soon.
