Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has finally been revealed and is releasing on October 25, 2019. One of the most interesting things about the reveal is that Activision and Infinity Ward have disclosed that the title will be based on a brand new engine, apparently tailored for next-gen systems.

The technology is just being called “the new engine,” so we don’t have a name nor some clues about the way it has been worked on. Anyway, it has been built in house, so it’s not just a middleware such as the Unreal Engine 4, which would’ve been great the same way, I think.

“The new engine in Call of Duty Modern Warfare will feature the latest advancements in visual engineering, including a physically-based material system allowing for state-of-the-art photogrammetry, a new hybrid tile-based streaming system, new PBR decal rendering system, world volumetric lighting,” said the publisher in a press release.

The engine is a powerhouse from what we get to read and see since it is built to support 4K HDR and DirectX Raytracing on PC. The fact it is going to work with RTX is the thing that more than all the other stuff leads me to believe it is being used for next-gen systems since PS5 has been confirmed to be implementing Raytracing.

The PC version, on top of that, is being worked on by Beenox with the support of Raven Software and will be released exclusively on Battle.net. Looking at how performing it is, it makes sense that the game is not coming on Nintendo Switch anytime soon.

Spectral rendering promises to deliver thermal heat radiation and infrared identification for both thermal and night-vision in-game imaging, we also read in the press release. Furthermore, the game will sport a cutting-edge animation system and blend shape system, as well as full Dolby ATMOS support, on supported platforms, along with the latest in audio simulation effects.

As we’ve already shared, Modern Warfare is going to be different from Black Ops 4 as it is not featuring a Zombie mode nor a Battle Royale but is focusing on cooperative gameplay probably to fill the void left by Destiny’s return to independency.
