Nintendo Open to More Zelda Remakes, But Not Skyward Sword Without Motion Controls | E3 2019

Nintendo’s remake of the classic The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening was one of the biggest hits at this year’s E3. The upcoming title has a lot of people wondering if Nintendo has plans for more Zelda remakes. At this time, it doesn’t look like we’re going to receive any additional remake announcements, but it’s possible this could change in the future.

The Skyward Sword is somewhat of a black sheep among recent Zelda games. It has its fans, but it is widely considered to be one of the weakest entries in the series.

One big part of that is the game’s fussy motion controls. This revelation came up during this year’s E3 in an interview between Game Informer’s digital editor Brian Shea and Zelda series producer, Eiji Aonuma. Shea directly asked Eiji Aonuma if they would ever consider remaking the Skyward Sword without the motion controls. Aonuma left no room for ambiguity, saying that doing the game without it “might be close to impossible.”

Speaking on Zelda remakes in general, Aonuma told Game Informer that Nintendo didn’t want to remake games from the series unless they could add new elements that would differentiate it from the original.

“So when we remake, they originally have all these different elements, but we can keep on incorporating new elements and introduce new gameplay or new excitement into these games. So when I create a remake or reimagining of a Zelda game, I always incorporate something new or fresh,” Aonuma said.

Shea then asked if there were any other remakes planned for the series. Aonuma denied the existence of any projects currently in the works but did say that Nintendo would consider another remake. However, only if they found another exciting mechanic that they thought would fit well in an older game.

“Currently I don’t have plans, but there is a title that we can incorporate new elements or new features that is perhaps a perfect fit for a remake, then maybe we’ll consider it,” he said.
