That’s mainly because the Japanese firm was able to build two great titles in a row with Resident Evil 7 and the remake of Resident Evil 2, which was some confirmation that the studio had finally understood what people wanted from the series.
However, Capcom doesn’t feel like it has betrayed the core of the franchise with Project Resistance, as it still is a “survival horror experience” in the view of long-time producer Matt Walker, who talked about the matter on Twitter (via GamesRadar+).
“My take – we as a company need to continue to branch out and try to offer up new gameplay in addition to refining the experiences people expect from us. If we just continue to offer up the same thing over and over again, people will gradually lose interest with what we’re making,” Walker said, although recognizing people’s right to be disappointed.
“Project Resistance offers up a really interesting way to do that,” he said. “The most important part? That it’s a great survival horror experience, if non-traditional. I think we confuse things when we make things related to IP that don’t actually stay true to the core spirit of the IP, but this project happily doesn’t fall into that trap.”
As you can see, the game is still being seen as a survival horror experience loyal to the roots of the Resident Evil brand, despite going from solo gameplay to 4v1 matches à la Dead by Daylight and Friday the13th. We guess we’ll get to see how this can be possible only when we play it in October closed beta.
