A set of behind-the-scenes images from Nintendo has surfaced, giving the world a look at the trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s sequel from a new angle. More accurately, it shows one moment from the tantalizing trailer from several angles, at different points in the creative process.

First reported by VGC, the images come from Nintendo’s Japanese recruitment site and show how one brief image of Link in the trailer is transformed step-by-step from a piece of concept art into the final product. Starting with the initial artwork, the images show a motion capture actor performing as Link to get the right pose, then how that pose is turned into a 3D model of Link in the animation and modeling program Maya before finally coming out in the distinctive style of Breath of the Wild.

The images don’t offer any new details about the upcoming Breath of the Wild sequel, which isn’t too surprising given how Nintendo tends to keep secrets about the series under wraps. What’s interesting is how much it reveals about the work that goes into making even just a trailer for an upcoming game. It’s rare for any developer to show so much about what goes on behind closed doors, let alone Nintendo, making these pictures especially instructive for anyone interested in making games themselves, or just curious about the process.

Nintendo’s recruitment site also posted behind the scenes images of some of Breath of the Wild’s architecture, its title screen, and Impa’s house in Kakariko Village, for anyone interested in seeing more of how the game came together.

Breath of the Wild

The trailer for the Breath of the Wild sequel debuted at E3 2019, showing what seems to be a darker, more horror-inspired take on the Zelda series. While it launched lots of speculation, including hopes that Zelda could at long last be playable outside of a wretched CDI game, actual gameplay details are scarce. Nintendo hasn’t yet announced a release date for the high anticipated game.
