A mother who voted for Trump says ICE killed her daughter, then told lawmakers ‘no one can protect against’ agents who ignore the law

Donna Ganger, the mother of Renee Good, testified at a Capitol Hill forum that she is a registered Republican who voted for President Donald Trump, believing federal immigration agents would protect American citizens, according to USA Today.

“I voted for President Trump under the impression that these agents were here to protect the citizens of the United States, innocents like our family and the others here, against terrorists, certainly not to accuse those of us here of being terrorists and take precious lives,” Ganger said. “But no one can protect against others who are determined to disregard our country’s constitutional rules and values.”

She described her family as “a very American blend,” saying, “We vote differently, but we love each other deeply,” and added, “far more than being a Republican, I am a Christian. Jesus teaches us to forgive and I have, but what we’re asking for and deserve is accountability and change.”

What actually happened to her daughter

Good, 37, a U.S. citizen and mother of three, was fatally shot by ICE agent Jonathan Ross on Jan. 7 in Minneapolis. According to multiple accounts of the encounter, Good’s car was stopped sideways in the street when Ross circled it on foot. Another agent then reached through her open window and ordered her to get out before Ross fired, Audacy reported.

Trump initially said Good had “violently, willfully, and viciously ran over” the officer, and then-Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called her actions “an act of domestic terrorism.” Video taken by Ross’s own cellphone appeared to show Good turning her car away from him before he fired. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called the self-defense account a “garbage narrative” after reviewing the footage, and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled Good’s death a homicide.

Trump has separately described her death as “worse” than that of Alex Pretti, another ICE shooting victim, because Good’s parents were “big Trump fans,” according to the Daily Beast. Ross was later transferred and has resumed duties; no charges against him have been reported.

The forum was hosted by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif. It included Rachel Reyes, the mother of Ruben Ray Martinez; Stella Carlson, who recorded the fatal shooting of Pretti, a 37-year-old VA nurse killed by Customs and Border Protection agents two and a half weeks after Good’s death; Ronaldo and Lorenzo Salgado, sons of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo; and Sean Murphy, representing the family of Johan Sebastian Duran Guerrero, TurnTo10 reported.

Sen. Tina Smith, D-Minn., thanked the Ganger family and Carlson for “speaking for all of us from Minnesota.” Organizers said Republican colleagues were invited but none attended. A CNN analysis has found at least 21 people have been shot by ICE and CBP personnel during the current Trump administration.

Good’s brother, Brent Ganger, also testified, telling lawmakers, “Since Renee’s death, no meaningful changes occurred and judging by the lack of attendance by your counterparts across the aisle, none seems to be planned. Deaths of innocent Americans by taxpayer-funded government agents should not be a partisan issue and should alarm every American.”

Donna Ganger said her family wants assurance no other family endures a similar loss. “We need this never, ever to happen again and destroy another family or a community,” she said.
