Agents executed a ‘judicially authorized search warrant’ at Ilhan Omar’s DC home, weeks after Tom Homan said a ‘criminal’ probe was underway

Homeland Security Investigations agents searched the home of a sitting member of Congress under a warrant the Justice Department says a court authorized. No charges have been reported, and officials have not said what the investigation covers.

Federal agents carried out a search warrant at Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, DC, home early Monday, about a month after Tom Homan, the White House border czar, said a criminal investigation of her was underway. According to New York Post, agents in Homeland Security Investigations jackets were seen taking boxes from the house to government vehicles.

A Justice Department spokesperson said the agents “executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice”. The spokesperson said the action is tied to an ongoing federal criminal investigation. Homan later told Fox News that a judge signed the warrant, but he declined to discuss specifics. Officials have not said what the investigation covers, and no charges have been reported.

Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, wrote on X that the search was “an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement.” Her office said she has done nothing wrong. President Donald Trump told reporters he played no part in it and that the matter belongs to the Justice Department.

What is known about the investigation

People familiar with the matter have told several news outlets that the probe centers on Omar’s immigration paperwork, including documents her late father completed when she was a child. The same accounts say investigators are examining possible false statements and immigration fraud. Those accounts are unconfirmed, and the Justice Department has not described the focus of its inquiry. Vice President JD Vance has accused Omar of immigration fraud, and she has denied it.

Homan said in September that Omar was the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation and gave no specifics. Omar said at the time that no one had contacted her about one. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin also said last month that an investigation was ongoing. On Monday, Homan said the Justice Department and Homeland Security are jointly leading it, and that he did not want to get ahead of Attorney General Todd Blanche.

A neighbor told a reporter that agents arrived around 4:30 a.m., and the street was blocked off Monday morning. Reports have not said whether Omar was home. She was first elected in 2018 and represents Minnesota’s 5th District, which includes Minneapolis. The search came about three weeks before the midterm elections, in which Omar is seeking reelection, and early voting in Minnesota begins later this week.

Reports note that Justice Department practice has generally avoided overt investigative steps, such as search warrants, against candidates within 60 days of an election. House Democratic leaders, including Hakeem Jeffries, called the search deeply disturbing and raised concerns about the use of federal law enforcement. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said Trump is abusing his power to go after political opponents weeks before an election.

Supporters of Omar rallied at Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis on Monday. Republican Rep. Tom Emmer said “accountability is coming,” and John Nagel, Omar’s opponent in the congressional race, said voters deserve answers and a representative focused on serving them. Trump has called Omar a terrible person while saying the investigation is up to the Justice Department.

Omar has not been charged with a crime. The administration has also announced other immigration-related fraud actions in recent days, including Vance singling out Microsoft over fraud in a labor certification program.
