Diablo-style Darksiders game coming to all major platforms.
THQ Nordic has announced a new spin-off entry in the Darksiders franchise, but this one takes a step in a radically new direction.
Darksiders Genesis will ditch the third-person, action adventure style camera employed by the previous three games, and instead will opt for an isometric, top-down style view. Not only that, but the game will be more of an action-RPG with an emphasis on dungeon crawling, monster killing, and loot collecting.
You also play as a new Horseman of the Apocalypse Strife who, according to THQ, “is called upon to save humankind from certain destruction at the hands of Lucifer, and is set to feature “intense combat, exploration, puzzle-solving, epic boss battles and serpent holes from heaven to hell.”. We expect multiplayer to feature heavily as is common with Action RPGs, though the Cinematic Trailer doesn’t make it obvious whether this is the case, and the Darksiders games have traditionally been solo adventures.
The series last mainline entry, Darksiders 3, launched in November last year and received a fairly mixed reception, praising combat but criticising technical issues and the fairly uninspired new protagonist in Horsewoman Fury.
It’s not the first time we have seen a major franchise switch to a more ARPG orientated game. The Tomb Raider series saw something similar in Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, and its sequel The Temple of Osiris. The former was well received, praised for its Co-op emphasis, though the latter did less well.
The trailer confirms a release on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia and PC Steam (no mention of the Epic Games Store), though currently there is no set release date for the new game.
Very few other details are known but with E3 just around the corner, we expect to know more about this spin-off to the Darksiders franchise soon. You can see the cinematic trailer released today below.
