Previously, the game was curiously bereft of the familiar owls and other critters Hogwarts students kept as their companion animals, but now they’re available—for a fee. You can select an owl, cat, rat, or toad now, each to be purchased with the in-game Gems currency that you can pay real cash for.
The animals are pretty expensive, however, especially considering they’re essentially cosmetic items that can follow you around Hogwarts and provide small energy boosts. The cheapest pets you can purchase are 160 gems for the rat or frog.
It gets worse though, for the animals that folks really want. It’s 215 gems for the cat or 320 gems for the owl. Having cute companions in this game doesn’t come cheap, after all.
Considering it costs $4.99 to purchase 130 gems, you’re going to be paying a considerable amount of money for these animals, unless you want to grind for a while. You’ll be doing so a lot longer than it’d take you to mull over purchasing the gems, that’s for sure.
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery was already notorious for its money-grubbing ways when the game released, and this new setup doesn’t bode well for the future of the app, as these are some pricey pets you can choose from. Fans will likely pay it for the optional cuteness boost however, and honestly you can’t blame them. Just look how cute that cat is!
