During Microsoft’s E3 2018 press conference, Japanese gaming publisher Square Enix unveiled Dontnod Entertainment’s new Life is Strange installment, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, which is set to launch for Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4 on June 26. Oh, and it’s free.

Captain Spirit departs from the original Life is Strange and instead follows Chris, a young boy who lost his mother and lives with his alcoholic father. Chris uses his imagination to create a fantastical world as “Captain Spirit,” transporting him to a strange extraterrestrial world in the process. For now, it’s unclear if Chris actually has superpowers like Life is Strange’s Max Caulfield, which would let him affect the world around him.

Fans have been expecting a new Life is Strange for quite some time. During May 2017, Square Enix revealed that a new Life is Strange was in development, and Life is Strange’s official Tumblr blog announced that Dontnod Entertainment would “present the new story and characters of the next Life is Strange “in the “coming months.” Clearly, that time has come.

In a video exploring Captain Spirit’s development, Dontnod said that the studio wanted to focus on a “short” and “full” experience focusing on a morning in one character’s life. The studio describes Chris as a “lonely” child who isn’t raised very well by his father, and so he uses Captain Spirit to escape some of the hardships in his world.

Captain Spirit isn’t Life is Strange 2, however. Dontnod hinted that the player’s choices as Chris will “have some consequences in the second season” of Life is Strange, which has not been revealed quite yet. An official announcement on Life is Strange 2 may be coming during Square Enix’s E3 2018 press conference, although it remains unclear for now if that is the case.

Prior to The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit’s official unveiling, Square Enix released Life is Strange: Before the Storm, an episodic miniseries starring Chloe Price. In the original series, Chloe serves as player character Max Caulfield’s best friend, and Before the Storm follows Chloe as she bonds with her classmate Rachel Amber, who goes missing by the time Max’s story begins in Life is Strange.

Expect Life is Strange’s Captain Spirit for June 26 on Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4. The game will launch for free across all platforms.
