Monopoly Gamer: Mario Kart Edition races to GameStop today

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

Monopoly Gamer was an excellent twist on the regular game, with Mario-centric characters, game spaces, and pieces that added up to a wholly unique experience. It didn’t need to change much, but the aspects it did alter from the original made for a very different game that felt very appropriate for the video game realm and the characters it drew from. That’s why Monopoly Gamer: Mario Kart Edition looks like such an interesting prospect.

The newly-skinned version of the game uses coins rather than paper bills, with an included set of adorable Mario Kart figures instead of the traditional spindle, thimble, and regular pieces. You’ll “race” around the board as part of a Grand Prix, utilize Power-Ups determined by a special die, and yes, there are Green Shells and Blue Shells to ruin your opponent’s world. There’s still a “go to jail” card as well as other familiar Monopoly setpieces, but there’s a wealth of changes you can take in with your friends and family with this new take on a classic.

Hasbro is going to be releasing additional character tokens with their own types of moves in-game, including Rosalina, Shy Guy, Donkey Kong, Bowser, Metal Mario, and Yoshi in addition to the included pieces. If they’re anything like the extra Monopoly Gamer game pieces, you can see which piece you’re getting through a clear plastic window in the package, so there’s no need to worry about having to buy multiple packs until you get the character you want.

If you’re tired of playing vanilla Monopoly or just want to add a Mario Kart-themed twist to the Gamer Edition, you can nab Monopoly Gamer: Mario Kart Edition right now at GameStop, and this June at additional retailers.
