Diddy Kong, Birdo, and Koopa Paratroopa will be totally free, without any unlocking prerequisites.

To get the characters, you’ll need to update your game when the update goes live in the fall (there isn’t a specific date just yet) and the trio should automatically be added. Previously, Koopa Troopa and Blooper were both introduced as free DLC to the game, so these three new options are the latest to join the fold. They were first available to players who took part in the original online tournament demo ahead of release, but now they should be up for grabs for everyone.

Mario Tennis Aces featured 16 playable characters at launch, with characters featuring various play styles. For instance, Mario is an All-Around player, while fan-favorite Waluigi is a Defensive choice. You can opt to play with different characters that match the way you play, which should make wiping the floor with your opponents that much easier.

It remains to be seen if we’ll receive any other additional characters in the game, but there’s always the distinct possibility that we could see Dry Bones, Dry Bowser, Shy Guy, or a combination of other faces becoming available in the future.
