A hidden cutscene for Metal Gear Solid V accidentally published earlier this month, honoring nuclear disarmament. In reality, plenty of nukes still exist in the game.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s secret nuclear disarmament cutscene has been officially revealed. But a tweet from the official Metal Gear account says that the cutscene should not have been shown.
On Feb. 2, 2018, Metal Gear Solid V players on the game’s Steam edition “unlocked” a nuclear disarmament cutscene, in which Venom Snake, Kazuhira Miller, and the Diamond Dogs honor nuclear disarmament as a reality. In the cutscene, every single nuclear device is stripped from the world, followed by a message discussing nuclear weapons’ continued existence throughout the real world.
But Konami revealed that the scene shouldn’t have been triggered. In reality, there’s still plenty of nukes throughout the game, and a mistake led to players unlocking the secret cutscene.
“We are still investigating, but can confirm that the event was triggered while the nuke count hadn’t reached zero,” Konami wrote in a tweet. “We would like to apologize for the inconvenience and reassure you that we will investigate the matter as well as take the necessary action to avoid this in the future.”
Phantom Pain fans have known for years that the nuclear disarmament cutscene was unlockable in the game, and PC players have been trying to receive it since the game came out. Originally, players would achieve the hidden scene by disarming every single nuclear device from the game’s “Forward Operating Base” multiplayer mode, leading to an official announcement.
It’s unclear why the cutscene triggered or if any hackers are responsible. But despite speculation from fans, it seems unlikely that Konami pulled the trigger on the reveal, as the company itself is actively investigating why the scene displayed.
