Video gaming’s next-generation is coming, and Bethesda’s Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI are leading the way.

Next-generation video games are coming, and E3 2018 marked their official unveiling. During Bethesda’s E3 2018 showcase director Todd Howard introduced the world’s first two next-gen games, kicking off a larger discussion on where the industry is headed in the next few years.

For PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners, it may be time to start saving up for the future. In May 2018, Sony said that the PlayStation 4 is entering the “final phase of its life cycle,” and during Microsoft’s E3 2018 press conference, Xbox head Phil Spencer confirmed that the Xbox One X development team is “deep into architecting the next Xbox consoles.” By E3 2019 or E3 2020, the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox One’s successor may be on the way for the holiday season.

No one knows for certain, but the future is coming one way or another. While we wait, here’s every next-generation game that’s been revealed during E3 2018.

Confirmed Next-Generation

Starfield

Starfield is Bethesda’s upcoming science-fiction video game for next-generation consoles, and it was the very first video game announced for future platforms. The game takes place in space and appears to feature space stations and black holes.

After the game’s reveal, Bethesda’s Todd Howard opened up a little bit more about the game’s development. For one, he made it clear that the company is willing to leave behind the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One if it isn’t feasible to place the game on the current-generation, GameSpot reports.

“When you’re making a game, you want to get the best stuff on the screen, and then you optimize and you do things and if it lands here, we can cast a wider net, great,” Howard told GameSpot. “But if we can’t … we’ve done that before.”

The game is in production at the moment and playable to a certain extent, according to VG247. Look for more information on Starfield in the coming years ahead as the game continues development.

The Elder Scrolls VI

Yes, Skyrim finally has a sequel, and it’s coming to next-generation consoles. The Elder Scrolls VI was revealed during Bethesda’s E3 2018 conference, and the game is currently in pre-production and isn’t playable yet, VG247 reports. Howard suggested that The Elder Scrolls VI will require more advanced technology to create than is currently available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Little is known about The Elder Scrolls VI otherwise beyond the fact that it’s currently being planned out by Bethesda. Expect more news in the coming years ahead.

Potentially Next-Generation

The following titles do not have a firm release date yet and may become next-generation games. Granted, their developers haven’t specifically said they are being designed for next-generation systems, so it remains unclear if they will release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One or PlayStation 5 and Xbox’s successor. But in the meantime, these are some games that may end up being next-generation releases.

Cyberpunk 2077

CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 has been in development for quite some time now, with the game originally announced in 2012. And the upcoming action role-playing game looks gorgeous. During its world premiere at Microsoft’s E3 2018 press conference, CD Projekt Red showed off the game’s engine, which touts impressive rendering effects and an enormous number of models onscreen at any given time.

While Cyberpunk 2077 is planned for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, a hidden message in the game’s trailer provides more information about the game’s development. For one, it certainly isn’t ready yet, and development is still on its way. That means a release date has yet to be revealed, too, and the game may miss a current-generation window.

“We’re definitely much closer to a release date than we were back then but it’s still not the time to confirm anything, so patience is still required,” CD Projekt Red writes in the trailer. “Quality is the only thing that drives us. It’s the beauty of being an independent studio and your own publisher.”

No matter when Cyberpunk 2077 launches, it’s certainly prepared for the next-generation of gaming. CD Projekt Red hinted earlier this year that Cyberpunk 2077 was designed so it is “ready to interface with future generations,” utilizing “future, very powerful” hardware in the process. While the game wasn’t explicitly called next-generation yet, expect more information as time goes on.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Very little is known about Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order at the moment. But we certainly know it’s coming, and it may end up being a next-generation title if the game’s release date is pushed off.

Developed by Respawn Entertainment, Fallen Order casts players as a Jedi Padawan during the “Dark Times” between Star Wars Episode III and Star Wars Episode IV where the Jedi are being hunted as the Galactic Empire gains power. Players will be able to use a lightsaber, suggesting the game will feature some combat.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is set for holiday 2019 at the moment, although development appears to be in early stages for now, suggesting that the game’s 2019 release date window may not be set in stone. If so, it could end up being a next-generation title. Either way, expect more information during E3 2019.
