Early November’s X018 has seen Microsoft revealing the acquisition of two more studios, inXile Entertainment and Obsidian Entertainment.
The latter’s been known for its works on role-playing games and the latest project from them is Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
Now, with the acquisition from Microsoft, of course the studio is starting to nurture new projects we’ll probably learn about in the future.
We’re beginning to learn the first details of what this project is going to be about.
Naturally, we’re expecting it to be a full-fledged RPG, but it’s also going to be bigger than the latest titles from the team and more technologically advanced.
Senior programmer Roby Atadero has shared some particulars regarding the tech being used, which we learn is Unreal Engine 4 at its core, for the first time in the studio’s history.
“Before the acquisition, Obsidian developed games using their in-house Onyx Engine,” The Inner Circle Games Network reports after a conversation with Atadero.
“The team would then move on to use Unity for Pillars of Eternity, and now have begun work on a new unannounced project using Unreal Engine 4.”
We don’t know when the project is going to be revealed but, considering the newest technology employed, it looks like it’ll be quite a long time to be fully developed.
Perhaps it’ll be among the first few AAA titles to be dropped on the next generation Xbox Scarlett, which is reported to be coming 2020.
