The industry has shared its reactions over the split between Bungie and Activision.
As we’ve already reported, the studio is gaining the publishing rights for the intellectual property of Destiny.
This means that the developer is not reaching other publishers but is going full indie in order to better shape the future of its game(s).
Among the few industry members who have shared their impressions about the move, we can find Xbox’s Phil Spencer and Epic Games devs.
“Looking forward to a very bright future working with one of my favorite independent studios on one of my favorite franchises,” said Spencer.
He added he’s “excited to see how they continue to grow and evolve Destiny.”
On top of that, several Epic Games staffers have shared comments about the split between Activision and Bungie.
PR boss Nick Chester said that “self-publishing a game at this (or any!) scale is HARD. It’s not a switch you flip.”
“Bungie will have to learn a lot, grow in new ways, and they may stumble. We did and still do. But when they come out the other side, the game and its players will see a huge benefit.”
Fortnite studio’s president Mark Rein has shared his congratulations, while CEO Tim Sweeney had a deeper comment on the matter.
“Congratulations to Bungie on its second declaration of independence!,” Sweeney said, hinting at the first separation from Microsoft.
“2019 is shaping up to be an awesome year for independent developers and their ability to reach the world’s billions of gamers directly.”
Hopefully, he’s right about this and we’ll see Destiny 2 shine again in 2019. As for future games, we’ll have to wait a bit longer, we guess.
