During a talk with the investors, as per a WSJ report, Sony Interactive Entertainment boss John Kodera has revealed that PlayStation, similarly to Microsoft, is willing to leave the concept of console generations behind.
“We need to depart from the traditional way of looking at the console life cycle,” he reportedly said. “We’re no longer in a time when you can think just about the console or just about the network like they’re two different things.”
This comes as part of the idea that he console should be included in a shared ecosystem, something like what Xbox has been doing for a few years now, and that could be relevant also in terms of backwards compatibility.
Interestingly, Kodera thinks that the portable gaming business should be a part of this “network,” while in the recent past, under Andrew House, PlayStation has left PS Vita behind and has reportedly been less and less interested in the matter.
“We need a broader perspective than that because so many things are now connected via the internet,” said the newest CEO, although we can’t really say whether he’s really thinking of another portable dedicated device or of the push on the mobile market in the likes of Nintendo, something that Sony has already started to work on.
Anyway, it’ll be interesting to see where Kodera is going to lead PlayStation in the next few years after the PS4 lifecycle comes to an end, reportedly around 2020-2021.
