PlayStation has been certified as the best-selling home video game console ever, with over 450 million units sold worldwide across the original PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4.

“We’re thrilled to be certified as the best-selling home video game console brand ever, with over 450 million units sold across the original PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 as of Nov. 7,” says a tweet from the official PlayStation Twitter account.

The result is sparking some controversy on the Internet mainly because it’s based on VGChartz, a website that tracks consoles and games’ sales around the world but has been often proved to be lacking precision when compared to official sales. VGChartz has been a banned source on forums with sharp moderation, such as ResetEra.

However, the milestone has been certified by Guinness World Records, the “global authority on record-breaking achievements since 1955,” and further confirms the commercial success not only of the past PlayStation consoles but also of PS4.

PS4 has reached 102.8 million consoles shipped globally as of Sep. 30, 2019, which has made it the second best-selling home console ever, beating the original PlayStation (102.49 million units) and the Wii (101.63 million units), and only lagging behind PlayStation 2.

PlayStation is celebrating today its 25th anniversary, as the original PlayStation was released on Dec. 3, 1994, in Japan, and will have its newest iteration, PS5, released by Holiday 2020, in around one year from now.
