Niantic has rolled out a new update for Pokémon Go, this time with a ton of new Alolan Pokémon, which you can only get via the new gifting feature, which was just introduced yesterday.
The gifting feature made its debut along with trading and the addition of a social friend mechanic, and it allows players to give and receive items. You collect gifts by spinning PokéStop discs, and you can then send them to other players on your friends list. You won’t be able to open them yourself, but there are tons of interesting items that you can give others instead.
Included in the mix are new seven kilometer Eggs, which will indeed hatch into special Alolan forms of the Kanto Pokémon available in-game, including Alolan Vulpix, Meowth, Grimer, and Sandshrew, as evidenced in the promotional image uploaded via Niantic. You can also pick up two more, including Diglett and Geodude, when they start appearing around the world during the weekend of Pokémon Go Fest, which is scheduled to take place on July 14 and 15.
The Alolan forms of Pokémon first made their debut in Pokémon Sun and Moon on Nintendo 3DS, and along with cosmetic differences, they also feature different types. For instance, Meowth gains the Dark trait, Vulpix is now an Ice Pokémon, and Sandshrew also gains Ice and Steel traits. Previously, Exeggutor was added to Pokémon Go as the first Alolan type to appear in the game last month. It’s now available again if you look hard enough, but it’s extremely rare at the moment.
If you’re looking to grab the Alolan Pokémon, get out there and start gifting so you can receive gifts in return. These are variations you definitely won’t want to miss.
