If you’ve been looking forward to playing Pokémon Go with its new features, like the ability to add friends and trade with other trainers, Niantic may have just put a damper on the whole situation. If you’ve been looking forward to playing Pokémon Go with its new features, like the ability to add friends and trade with other trainers, Niantic may have just put a damper on the whole situation. These systems are now live, but it seems that at this time, only players level 40 and up can add friends and participate in the new features.

Right now, if you want to add friends to your list, send gifts, or trade Pokémon with others, you’ll need to have played the game for a considerable amount of time. This may be a safeguard in place to keep players from cheating, as many tend to do. Allowing people to make new accounts simply to gift items and trade Pokémon would obviously upset the balance of the game, so this could be temporary, or just how the game is going to approach these new features going forward.

In addition, trading Legendary Pokémon, Pokémon in your Pokédex, and Shiny Pokémon will require 20,000 Stardust. If you don’t have the Legendary Pokémon you’re trading in your Pokédex, you’ll need to pony up 1,000,000 Stardust. All other standard trades will cost 100 Stardust. You’re also limited to sending only one gift per friend each day.

These restrictions and high Stardust costs could eventually be altered, but that’s how things stand on the first day of Pokémon Go’s newest features being implemented. Niantic hasn’t offered any commentary on the changes just yet, but we’ll keep you updated on any alterations made to each system.
