Niantic has announced that it will be dropping support for Apple devices that are unable to upgrade to iOS 11 on Feb. 28. This includes iPads, meaning anyone with a 4th generation iPad will also be unable to play the game.

Some of the phones and iPads that will lose the game include:

  • iPhone 5C
  • iPhone 5
  • iPad (4th and 3rd generation)
  • iPad mini (1st generation)
  • iPad 2

The move is reportedly being made so that new unannounced features of the game can be implemented without the fear of problems and bugs from interactions with old software.

Users who are unable to update the game will lose out on access to the game and any in-app purchased items players have paid for over the years.

As the game continues to evolve and add more features, it won’t be long until future iOS updates make current generation phones obsolete. Niantic has not made any similar announcement about the future of support for Android software.
