Trailer For Upcoming Pokemon Animated Film Shows New Design For Armored Mewtwo

The upcoming CGI, animated Pokémon film, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, shows fans a first glimpse of armored Mewtwo’s redesign.

While the live action Pokémon: Detective Pikachu has been receiving all the attention lately, do not forget that there will also be a new animated Pokémon film releasing later this year.

Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution is the first Pokémon film to be completely in CGI. It is also the twenty-second film by the franchise. A remake of the very first Pokémon movie, a beloved entry within the fandom, the movie focuses on the Pokémon Mewtwo.

A trailer was recently released on Japanese television, which can now be viewed on YouTube. In the trailer, at the 42-seconds mark, Mewtwo’s new armored design is shown.

Based on the trailer, Evolution appears to be an almost shot-for-shot remake of the very first Pokémon movie. The character designs and background aesthetics are almost exact the same as the original movie. Certain scenes in the trailer even have the same camera shots.

In the original movie, Mewtwo briefly wears robotic armor while under the command of the villainous Team Rocket. He quickly leaves the team and sheds his armor away.

Mewtwo’s original armor has been a popular look among Pokémon fans. The popular Super Smash Bros. mod, Project M, even had Armor Mewtwo as an alternate costume for Mewtwo.

Evolution has given Mewtwo’s armor a redesign. It is less round than the original one and looks bulkier as well. It is still stylish in a way, though it is yet to be seen if fans will warm up to this new armor given how iconic the original one was. (Personally, I miss the Cyclops-esque visor that the original Armor Mewtwo had.)

Though armored Mewtwo was expected to make an appearance in the Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, this adds fuel to the fire of the rumored armored Pokémon.

When Pokémon Sword and Shield were first announced, a rumor went around detailing that armor Pokémon will be coming to the games. Mewtwo was among those Pokémon in the rumor to be getting an armored form, with many fans assuming it will tie in with the upcoming Evolution film. I go over it more in this piece I wrote when the games were first announced.

Given how little has changed between Evolution and the original Pokémon film, it is odd that the filmmakers felt the need to redesign Mewtwo’s armor. It is possible that Mewtwo’s new armor form is hinting to armor Pokémon in Sword and Shield.

Of course, that is just speculation. Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution is expected to be released in Japanese cinemas on July 22.

The previous two animated Pokémon movies, I Choose You! and The Power of Us were released in United States’ theaters for a limited screening. Given Evolution is a remake of the very first Pokémon movie, it is expected that it will get a theatrical release in the States as well. I Choose You! and The Power of Us were both releases in Japanese theaters in July. They would later be released in the States that following November or December. Evolution will probably follow suit; expect it to come out in the States in November or December.

Mewtwo will also have a major role in Detective Pikachu. This seems to be Mewtwo’s year.
