As with all Pokémon games, Pokémon Sword and Shield will have Pokémon exclusive to each version as a way to encourage trainers to trade with friends. The first set of exclusive Pokemon got announced for the games.

So far, only two sets of Pokémon and their evolutions are confirmed. For Pokémon Sword, the Dark/Dragon-type Deino, and its evolutions Zweilous and Hydreigon from Black and White will be exclusive, as well as while Pokémon Sun & Moon’s Dragon/Fighting-type Jangmo-o, Hakamo-o and Kommo-o, who are only available to capture in Sword.

Meanwhile, Rock & Ground/Dark-types Larvitar and evolutions Pupitar and Tyranitar from Gold and Silver, and Dragons Goomy, Sliggoo, and Goodra from X & Y will be exclusive to Shield.

It marks the first time that most of these Pokémon have been exclusive to one game (except for Larvitar who was exclusive to Pokémon Y in Gen VI), and the power levels of each Pokémon are relatively high, which should encourage more players to try and trade Pokémon across each version. While none of the Pokémon currently announced for the game, new from today or known previously, are now in the list of exclusives, we expect the list to grow as the game gets closer to release.

Plenty of new features were announced today, including new Pokémon in the Galar region, new Gym Leaders and trainers you can expect to meet, and Gigantimax Pokémon.
