Everything We Know About Obstagoon in Pokemon Sword and Shield

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

Zigzagoon is getting a brand new third evolution called Obstagoon, where it stands on its hind legs with a far more aggressive attack pattern than its earlier forms

The new Pokemon Sword and Shield trailer released earlier this morning. We got a fresh look at an array of Galar-specific Pokemon, such as the new Galarian Zigzagoon and Linoone. These Pokemon are also receiving a brand new third evolution called Obstagoon, a dark and normal-type creature.

How did the new evolution come about for the Linoone? It was due to the more aggressive environment they find themselves in the Galar region. These Pokemon have to compete for more territory, turning them more hostile, and as they became more aggressive, they started to stand on their hind legs and became Obstagoon.

While the Obstagoon came about due to being more hostile, it’s not a creature who goes out of their way to attack other Pokemon. They’re more likely going to attempt to taunt another into a fight, forcing their combatants to make the first move. When they do, the Obstagoon crosses their arms, and when their opponents attack, they use the Obstruct move and counterattack. It’s a unique way to structure the Pokemon, given it’s meant to act as the fighter.

Obstagoon Fighting

What’s great is that while the Pokemon is meant to serve as the fighting type, it is not a fighting-type. Much like the new Galar-region Zigzagoon and Linoone, it’s a normal and Dark-type Pokemon. It’s going to have an array of similar attacks that reflect these types. It may serve as a better early battle choice since normal Pokemon don’t show up in most higher-tier line-ups. We’ll have to see what Obstagoon brings to the table.

We covered a bit of information about the new Galar-specific Zigzagoon, Linoone, the new form-changing Morpeko, and the new rivals coming to Pokemon Sword and Shield. The new title releases on Nov. 15, for the Nintendo Switch.
