The Pokémon Company released a trailer today, revealing more new information of the game. They introduce a few new Pokémon, one of which is the rock-type named Rolycoly. We’re going to detail the Pokemon’s unique steam engine ability in Pokemon Sword and Shield.

In the trailer, we see Rolycoly has one of two potential abilities. Pokémon abilities are a feature introduced in the third generations of Pokémon games. Most Pokémon only have one ability.

Rolycoly could potentially either have the Heatproof ability, or the brand new Steam Engine ability. Heatproof used to be an exclusive ability to Bronzor and Bronzong, the steel mirror and bell Pokémon, respectively. Heatproof weakens Fire-type moves, which is extremely useful to the steel-type Bronzor and Bronzong, as they are weak against fire.

Steam Engine, as revealed on Serebii, is described as radically increasing speed when hit by a fire or Water-type move. This description references how steam becomes vapors, which happens when water gets heated in scorching temperatures.

The upcoming generation of Pokémon games, Sword and Shield, was initially officially revealed in Feb 2019. This generation of Pokémon takes place in the Galar region, a region heavily inspired by the UK.

Pokémon Sword and Shield are slated to release on Nov 15, 2019.
