According to a report from Famitsu, Mega Evolutions and Z Moves will not be showing up in Pokemon Sword and Shield, and instead, the game will be focusing on the new Dynamax feature. Dynamax allows you to grow your Pokemon to enormous size for three rounds, significantly increasing their attack power.

Mega Evolutions allowed Pokemon to temporarily transform into their Mega version, as long as the Pokemon is holding the Mega Stone for their species, although this was limited to a reasonably small number of Pokemon. It was introduced in Pokemon X and Y. It could be done in battle, and the Pokemon could still attack after transforming. Mega Evolutions could even change their types and abilities.

Z-Moves were introduced in Pokemon Sun and Moon and were like the ultimate versions of certain attack moves. Players needed to have a Z-Ring, Z-Crystal, and a Pokemon with the same Z-Crystal and appropriate move to be able to perform a Z-move.

Instead, Sword and Shield will be focusing on Dynamax to shake up the gameplay and bring something to the table that even the most experienced Pokemon Trainers won’t have experienced yet.

Pokemon Sword and Shield will release on November 15 for Nintendo Switch.
