In 2017 alone, PlayStation 4 sold 20.2 million units worldwide. Out of these 20.2 million, 5.9 million units were sold during Holiday Season 2017.
As we can see from the graph below, 2017 has been so far the best year for the PS4 and Sony of course. If we are to consider the year one sales of PS4 i.e. 2013, it only sold 4.2 million units, and no one would have thought that it would become the bestselling console.
During its launch period the console did not have a lot of games to offer, so the inclination of gamers towards it wasn’t that much. But, the sales in 2016 and 2017 just show how good games can boost the sales of a console, Uncharted The Lost Legacy and Horizon Zero Dawn are the games of discussion here. Thus the 20.2 million sales of PS4 in 2017.
On 9th January, Sony announced that they had sold 5.9 million units just during the Christmas holiday season of 2017, which is more than a whole year’s sale (2013).
With some further research done by Daniel Ahmad, an analyst at Niko Partners, he revealed the sales of the whole of 2017 and compared it to past years, to find that 2017 was by far the best for Sony.
PlayStation 4 has now sold through 73.6 million PlayStation 4’s as of December 31st 2017. A total of 20.2 million units were sold in 2017.
Total software sales is now 645 million. A total of 243.9 million units of software were sold in 2017. https://t.co/UzQ5LoS7JD

Here is a chart which shows annual hardware sell through for the PlayStation 4.
As you can see, 2017 is currently the peak year for PlayStation 4 sales. This is due to continued sell through of PS4 at lower price points and additional sales of PS4 Pro.
