As you might’ve heard, Sony has revealed the specifics for PlayStation 5 ahead of its official reveal, which should happen between the end of 2019 and E3 2020.

According to a new report, this has happened for one specific reason: the company wanted to avoid any leak coming from developers.

As shared by Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, in fact, dev kits have been shipped, or are still being shipped, this month.

So, the idea is that Sony “beat everyone to it” by publicly revealing all the specifics before anyone could’ve leaked it in the wild (and we know that’s exactly what would’ve happened).

“As I said on today’s Kotaku Splitscreen – if you’re wondering why Sony randomly dropped PS5 news last week, one reason is that (I hear) a bunch of third-party studios got/are getting dev kits this month,” Schreier revealed on Twitter.

“Sony knew info would start leaking now. So they beat everyone to it.”

Indeed, the fact that Sony revealed the news kind of out of the blue, specifically because it wasn’t coming to E3 2019 so we weren’t anticipating any next-gen talk from them for a while, was rather surprising.

This is a quite good reason, since at least they granted a bit of news coverage both for the company and the platform, without actually doing a public event where they wouldn’t have been able to answer all the question or bring enough material to share.

Hopefully, we’ll learn more about the console in a few months, by the end of the year at a possible PlayStation Experience, or later at E3 next year.
