PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds player numbers are slouching, according to SteamDB, with the game having fewer then one million players for the first time in over a year.

The current player count sits at around 960,000, 40,000 players away from the 1 million mark. This dip closely coincides with the release of the Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Blackout beta. Coincidence? Probably not.

PUBG was one of the main drivers behind the battle royale craze over the past year. The game, however, has failed to sustain its large number of players due to internal and external factors.

Primarily, the game has had to endure a number of tough competitors that have affected its numbers, the most obvious being Fortnite. Upcoming Call of Duty, Battlefield, and other games have also slowly looked to capitalize on the genre by making modes for its games. The game is also riddled with bugs and performance issues which forced PUBG Corp to create the “Fix PUBG” campaign.

The news also follows a datamine that revealed the fourth snow map for PUBG alongside a new vehicle. The map is reportedly six-by-six kilometers, which is larger then Sanhok but smaller than the other two maps currently available.
