Croteam and Devolver Digital have just formally announced Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass, five years after confirming that the game would be made.

The latest addition to the long-running twitch shooter series looks like an absolute blast, as these games tend to be, and the return of Sam is something to celebrate, especially if you’re someone who happens to love gunning down hundreds of bloodthirsty enemies at a time.

The carnage returns with Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass, as the game’s teaser trailer reveals. It’s a bit disarming, as Sam cruises the green countryside on a motorcycle. It seems quite peaceful, with the titular badass taking it easy, looking cool and armed to the teeth. Then a headless enemy shows up and runs around chaotically, as those enemies tend to do (holding two bombs, no less). We know we’re in for a familiar gorefest already, but that’s nothing compared to the last shot of the trailer. Hundreds of enemies are ready to pounce as Sam rides over the hill.

Oh crap.

That’s about all we have for now, unfortunately. The full game reveal won’t be coming until E3 2018 in June. It’s been seven years since the previous mainline Serious Sam entry, with Serious Sam BFE, a throwback first-person shooter that tasked players with killing anything that moved. Anything at all.

If you’re a Serious Sam fan, make sure you carve some time out for the full game reveal at E3 this year, because there could very well be some surprises attached to it. It’s been quite some time, so it’s possible that we may see some new and interesting changes to the formula. And we may see the same old addictive action, too. Either way, it’ll be a game to look forward to.
