The original System Shock may have debuted 24 years ago, but that hasn’t stopped it from getting its very first mod campaign. It’s called System Shock: Rewired, and it’s up for grabs for free right now.

Rewired takes players aboard a medical ship known as the UNN Bismarck, which the villainous SHODAN has taken over. It’s a much smaller vessel than the game’s Citadel Station, but the mod still contains a decent amount of content, including three levels with four cyberspace sections, multiple branching paths, puzzles, audio logs, and a smattering of other goodies. There may even be the addition of new voice recordings for the logs in the future, which is a pretty ambitious undertaking.

The mod obviously doesn’t look as excellent as it could, since it’s based on an older title, but if you’re a big System Shock fan, it’s well worth downloading for free. It’s compatible with both the original System Shock and System Shock: Enhanced Edition from Nightdive Studios, just in case you need something to keep you satisfied until the System Shock remake eventually releases.

Originally, Nightdive’s remake had been slated for release in the second quarter of 2018, but the project has been scaled back due to the demands and increasing project scope. It’s now planned to come out at some point in the next few years. Suffice it to say, it’s going to take a while. Hopefully it will still release at this point, due to the fact that development had essentially been restarted earlier this year.
