It took a while for Naughty Dog to finally confirm this, but it has finally done it: The Last of Us Part II will see protagonist Ellie accompanied by an NPC, similarly to the original game where she was at Joel’s side.

The confirm, after a quite indicative hint by lead gameplay designer Emilia Schatz, comes straight from creative director and co-series creator Neil Druckmann, who offered this comment during an interview with Buzzfeed.

“Well, so, Ellie used to be an NPC, but she’s the protagonist in this story, so the player is controlling Ellie. Umm, it’s safe to say with the game that we made in the past that there will be some NPC with you in this story, even though we’re not showing [the NPC] in this demo,” he told the site.

The demo he’s talking about is, of course, the demo we all saw at E3 2018, which was rather impressive and featured a new character called Dina, who’s in love with protagonist Ellie but is not seen outside of the initial cut-scene.

So, who could this companion be, after all? Well, all clues point at the fact that the character in question could be Joel, the original The Last of Us protagonist, as he’s not been showcased yet if not in the first teaser trailer where he looked, well, dead. We said Naughty Dog was kind of hiding something, and that looked the case at E3.

The Last of Us Part II hasn’t been attached with a release date, so it looks like there’s a lot of time left to learn all the possible information about this very hot topic for the fans of the franchise.
