One of the biggest news lately has been Microsoft announcing the acquisition of Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind Fallout New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity and the incoming The Outer Worlds, from the creators of the original Fallout franchise.
There were some big ripples in the games industry when Microsft announced their acquisition of Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind Fallout New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity and the incoming The Outer Worlds,
The reveal of Obsidian joining Xbox Game Studios happened when The Outer Worlds had already been in the making for a couple of years. The news was shared at X018 in November, only a couple weeks before Obsidian announced The Outer Worlds at The Game Awards.
In an interview with Windows Central, narrative designer Dan McPhee shared how the team felt about the acquisition and how the relationships with the other teams at Xbox Game Studios has been since the days of the deal.
“They’ve been great, honestly,” McPhee said. “It’s not something that directly affects this specific project, but just the general atmosphere has been awesome. It comes at the tail end of this project, but we’re already talking, we catch up with the sister studios, talking about different techniques and learn from them and stuff like that.”
The team is sure enough one of the most compelling ones at Xbox Game Studios. We’re excited to see more coming from them in a few years following the release of The Outer Worlds, which releases on October 25 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
As for Obsidian, the studio already has another team working on a brand new RPG, their first title to launch exclusively for Xbox One, Project Scarlett and Windows 10.
